Clarkson Village
Clarkson Village is a vibrant community located in Mississauga. It is located in the southwest region of Mississauga, bordering Lake Ontario. Lorne Park sits to its east, Erindale & Erin Mills to its north, and Oakville to its west.
History
Clarkson Village has humble roots. In 1808, Warren Clarkson and his brother came to Canada from New York looking for better opportunities for themselves. Warren enjoyed the area so much that he decided that he wanted it to be his permanent residence. After 11 years of hard work, he was finally able to save up enough to buy land.
As Warren aged, he married and raised a family. Warren began purchasing more land and built the first store, which was located along stagecoach trail. Inside the store a post office was opened, where the Clarkson family ran for 45 years.
Until 1856, the community remained relatively small. When Capitan Edward Sutherland moved to the area with his family, he introduced strawberry and raspberry cultivation to the area. The success of this cultivation flourished and Clarkson became known as the “Strawberry Capital of Canada”.
Today
Clarkson is still a popular area, located between Lorne Park and Oakville along Lake Ontario. It is home to the Petro-Canada refinery, which produces lubricants, and the St. Lawrence Cement Terminal which distributes cement for Toronto and surrounding areas.
