History of Lorne Park
Lorne Park was initially owned by First Nations peoples Mississaugas, where the land was then transferred by treaty to John Graves Simcoe in early 1800. The 75 acres of land where the Lorne Park neighbourhood now is was initially to be used for its wood from surrounding trees. In 1888, the Lorne Park Summer Resort Company transformed the land into resort style living, by building small cottages, a hotel, a wharf, various walking trails and common grounds. The Lorne Park community was operated by the Toronto Park Association and included separate parlours for both men and women, bowling lanes & merry go rounds.
Many buildings were designed by the famous Canadian architect Edmund Burke, who designed the entire Lorne Park community in the 1800s. In the 1900s, more and more individuals began buying multiple lots in order to build large properties in Lorne Park.
Travel to Lorne Park was often done by stream. However, after a series of bankruptcies, the Lorne Park resort lands were sold to cottagers. It isn't until the access of the QEW highway, that suburbanization of the original lands and surrounding areas begins in the post WWII period.
Lorne Park Today
Lorne Park Estates is a community of roughly 77 acres located within the City of Mississauga. Homeowners in the Lorne Park Estates are responsible not only for municipal taxes and land upkeep, but also cooperatively responsible for the upkeep & taxes on 37 acres of the area, including walking trails, roads, forests and the beach area.
There are only two roads that actually lead into Lorne Park Estates, however they are considered private because they are narrow, lack sidewalks, and also have many dead ends.
Within the last 6 years, a new community has developed into the Lorne Park Area -- Watercolours. Watercolours is a development that has been built by Mattamy homes, and is considered one of the most sought after areas in Lorne Park and Mississauga.
